Exploring the Vulcan trail

Red Mountain is home to a variety of parks and trails in the Birmingham area, but the Vulcan Trail is one that is especially important in terms of history.

Scattered with abandoned mines, mining equipment and aging structures, the trail itself provides a plethora of sights and sounds.

“Red Mountain was the center for Birmingham’s mining for around 100 years,” said historian Bill Ivey. “The Vulcan Trail gives people a glimpse into an area that was an important center for mining.”

The trail itself is one mile long and 12 feet wide. Both walking and biking are allowed on the trail that winds around the north slope of Red Mountain.

Although the trail is not connected with Red Mountain Park, future developments may include extending the path to Green Springs Highway and uniting it with the park.
