What to do in Birmingham this weekend

Wondering what to do this weekend? Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered. Welcome to your Local Weekend Itinerary.  Birmingham has highs of mid-60s and sunny skies for the next few days, which means we will be spending most of our time outside.

I believe there are three components to every good weekend: good food, good shopping and good fun. Birmingham has an abundance of all three, and it’s about time we start acting like tourists in our own city. Our first stop: shopping in the sun.

The COVID-19 pandemic took away so many of our favorite outdoor shopping experiences for far too long, but thankfully, our markets are starting to open back up. Bring your mask and head over to Good People Brewing Company for the Magic City Market. It’s opening weekend from 1-5 pm for the next three alternating Saturdays for anyone looking to spend time outside and shop for local goods. There will be food trucks, tents of local vendors, and a portion of the proceeds are benefitting the Active Learning Childcare Center which provides a hands-on educational experience for unique individuals. So if you are looking to shop local, enjoy the sunshine, and experience the culture that comes with Birmingham’s food trucks, Magic City Marketplace is for you.

Magic City Market is a popular event in Birmingham for locals.
Roots and Revelry is located in downtown Birmingham.

After all that shopping, you are sure to have worked up an appetite. Visit Roots and Revelry for an incredible atmosphere and even more delicious brunch. This award-winning restaurant on the second floor of the Thomas Jefferson building fulfills all of our brunch dreams. They were named “Best New Restaurant in Birmingham” in 2017 and haven’t let us down since.

They are a modern take on “fun fine dining.” From chicken and waffles, eggs benedict, biscuits and gravy and even beignets, R&R has all the essentials. Stop in from 11 A.M to 2 P.M. and fill up on some of the South’s most classic brunch plates along with a refreshing mimosa. You are sure to leave feeling full, refreshed and relaxed by their calming, modern, atmosphere.

Now that you’re nice and fueled up, we are ready to scratch our last to-do off your Local Weekend Itinerary. What is more fun than trying new things? Homewood Central Park is always full of runners, cyclists, kids running around the playground, skateboarders and speed-walkers.

This weekend we are looking to add to the chaos by strapping you in some roller skates. I don’t think there is a better way to work off those chicken and waffles than to skate your way into the sunset. This is sure to be a fun activity for the whole family, and you can get your skates at one of the cycle shops just a few streets over. Homewood park has sidewalks all around the circumference that insure the smoothest skate Birmingham could offer. Don’t forget those knee pads and a helmet, and we wish you the best of luck. Thanks for joining us on our Birmingham weekend adventures and be sure to tag us on Instagram if you visit any of our suggested places that are sure to deliver amazing shopping, food and fun!

Homewood Central Park is a great place to skate, walk and play.
